Methodology
Every date here comes from the council's own published page, and nothing is published unless it reconciles against the number of school days that council itself declares.
The list of authorities is the 153 English upper-tier councils with education responsibility, taken from ONS Open Geography (Counties and Unitary Authorities, December 2025) under the Open Government Licence. Council websites come from the GOV.UK Local Links Manager API. Term dates are read from each council's own term-dates page, which is linked from that council's page here.
Coverage today: 77 of 153 councils, 166 council-years. This is incomplete and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Councils are still being added.
Every council-year has to pass all of these, or it is held back and not shown at all:
These are the dates a council sets for the schools it maintains. Academies, free schools, foundation schools and voluntary-aided schools set their own, and often differ by a day or two. Training days are chosen school by school. Always check your own school's calendar before booking.
There is no pricing or availability data here, and no affiliate links. The travel notes on each break are guidance drawn from what that season is like, not from prices we have measured — because we have not measured any.
Penalty notice figures come from GOV.UK's guidance on legal action to enforce school attendance, checked 25 August 2026: £80 per parent per child, rising to £160 if unpaid within 21 days; £160 for a second in three years; a third offence in three years goes to prosecution instead. Whether an absence is referred at all is a decision for the school and the council.
